Hearts and Vines and Good Times

Quarterflash. Now there’s a blast from the past! The Pacific Northwest band that was an 80’s sensation with hits like “Harden My Heart” and “Find Another Fool” performed on October 4th at a benefit concert to raise money and awareness for Hearts & Vines, a Southern Oregon non-profit organization dedicated to funding community-based youth and family programs with a focus on the elimination of domestic violence in the Rogue Valley through education, prevention and intervention.

Quarterflash performing at the Hearts & Vines benefit concert at Wells Land Vineyard

The Hearts & Vines benefit concert was held at Wells Land Vineyard in the Applegate Valley, Oregon. This location is also the home of Garon Lee Sound, and that’s the Bluejay Productions connection. You see, I work for GLS as the A1 FOH Engineer, and I have been mixing and performing at these Heart & Vines benefits for 6 years. My first year’s experience was to play keyboards in the opening band for Craig Chaquico of Jefferson Starship, and in subsequent years I played in Craig’s band both at this benefit and on his tour. You never know what amazing connections you might make while volunteering your time. Bluejay Productions is proud to be involved in this great event that generated $12,000 for Hearts & Vines this year, and similar amounts in years past, and to be working with Garon Wells and GLS, who donate much time and planning, concert sound and lights, and an amazing amphitheater in which to perform! And Garon and I get to open these shows with our house band, Bird Dog and the Misdemeanors.

Song Immersion

I love mixing other people's music! Audio engineering, we call it in the industry, but that sounds so technical and sterile. I like the term "mixing", perhaps because I used to work as a bartender and I see similarities between the two. The act of blending sounds and...

A Epic Musical Year!

This has been my busiest year in audio engineering since the 2008 recession hit, and I have had a ton of fun and inspirational experiences recording in my studio and mixing concerts! The new location for Bluejay Productions, perched on a mountain side in the forest...

Waiting For The Show

Sitting here waiting for the show to start, I'm thinking about all the shows I mixed this year. Amphitheaters, festival stages, county fairs, clubs, graduation ceremonies, private parties, and then there is the Applegate River Lodge. This place is an island. A green...

Mixing Belushi

Actor, comedian, and musician Jim Belushi is a powerhouse of fun, and his band, the Sacred Hearts, is a high voltage, versatile band that knows how to party! I had the great pleasure of mixing their set, working as A1 for Garon Lee Sound, at Edenvale Winery in...

Reel To Reel: Recording The Legendary Goodtimes

To capture the quintessential retro rock sound, The Legendary Goodtimes sessions began with 4 reels of tape, a Sony APR 5000 reel tape recorder, a Midas Venice console and a Crest CPL1288 dual compressor. It seemed a worthy, economical approach for a band that wanted...

The Votes Are In!

Pleased to have place third in The Rogue Valley Messenger's Best Recording Engineer/Studio category. Thank you to our supporters! It is a pleasure to work in Southern Oregon. Congrats to my colleagues at Oregon Sound Recording and...

How Well Do You Know Your Microphones?

This is a fun quiz. I've worked with most of these mics and most are studio staples. The one that tripped me up was the Coles, an incredible mic I've used once in a session with Nadine Loren. How Well Do You Know Your...
